As Bayview Farms, I have been running a small Hunter Jumper business for nearly 40 years starting in Santa Cruz and now residing in Minden, Nevada for the last 25 years.
As time has flown by I have endured a customer base that has seen most of our show horses age out and need a place to be retired. That now has turned out to be my place.
As I've become the caregiver for many elderly horses who have been so wonderful in giving everything they had to their humans, I feel like it's important for me to establish a place for these older horses to be cared for indefinitely and long after their work careers are over. They don't all thrive being turned out in fields and they certainly don't thrive when they're just set aside because their human has moved on to a younger, brighter horse or left the sport entirely.
Having said that, we are establishing this nonprofit to legitimize and establish a safe place for retired or elderly animals to land. My experience of caring for horses all these years in my backyard has shifted from managing show horses to loving, caring for, and managing aging animals and I'd like to continue to provide that alongside maintaining my small group of show horses at Bayview.
The project of Soft Landing is already in working order but the addition of the nonprofit status may help in the fundraising for those that need the tax deductions. This process of establishing the 501c3 is costly and time consuming.
So I'm asking for support for this concept and it's eventual outcome.
The fundraising is intended to provide coverage of the costs that come along with the feed programs and daily care of these lovely old creatures.
In addition we will be aware of and assist with the care for them when they cross over ..which is the biggie. It is the single most heartbreaking event that most people don't see through to when they buy a horse.
The nature of my business has always been a 24-hour, seven day a week, hands-on responsibility and with the establishment of Safe Landing, that work dedication can extend more specifically to these lovely animals who need us so much.
Thank you for your consideration and generosity.
